Stephen Mattes

Independent healthcare integration architect and consultant with extensive experience across clinical systems, interoperability and complex healthcare technology environments.

About me

Principal Consultant, MedSmart

I specialise in healthcare integration architecture and in solving difficult problems involving clinical and administrative systems.

My work sits across the boundary between architecture and implementation. I can work with executives and programme teams to understand the problem and assess architectural options, then get into the technical detail required to make the solution work.

I have spent much of my career working within NSW Health and have extensive experience with electronic medical records, patient administration systems, pathology, radiology, enterprise imaging, billing and statewide integration platforms.

My technical background includes HL7, FHIR, MuleSoft, Cerner Millennium / Oracle Health, Open Engine, MPages, CCL, SQL and integration middleware.

How I work

Difficult healthcare integration problems usually cross more than one technical boundary. The system may be behaving correctly while the workflow around it is not.

I try to establish what is actually happening before recommending what should change.

  • Understand the clinical and business requirement.
  • Trace the relevant systems, data and workflows.
  • Identify the actual source of the problem.
  • Develop and compare practical architectural options.
  • Explain implications clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Implement or coordinate the solution where required.
